Education

In 1998 ICE Yorkshire & Humber began its schools initiative to promote civil engineering to society with a team of around a dozen members, largely from the Graduates' and Students' Committee.

The Regional Education Team (RET) has now grown to contain over 150 ICE Ambassadors, willing volunteers from all sectors of civil engineering, working to promote the profession throughout the education system.

Through our working partnership with STEMNET we have been able to attend well in excess of 100 events each year recently, and with our collaborative partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institution of Structural Engineers we hope to be able to improve dramatically on these figures to reach even more of the over 4000 schools in our Region.

As our activities expand and more projects are developed, we continually need the support of our members. Involvement in this initiative will be part of a member’s Continuing Professional Development and may also contribute to fulfilling parts of the Development Objectives.

Further information about our activities and the ICE Ambassadors scheme is available on this website, or by contacting one of our Education Coordinators using the details on the right.

Educational activities

The Regional Education Team works with schools, colleges and universities, and we:

  • deliver practical educational activities
  • attend careers fairs
  • deliver careers presentations
  • give presentations to specific audiences
  • support events in universities

In schools, we aim to deliver highly exciting and educational activities based on the themes of civil engineering. These are designed to cater for all Key Stages and are tailored specifically to incorporate many different areas of the National Curriculum. All of the activities have been very well received by the schools over the years and we have now begun plans to develop additional activities that reflect even more disciplines from the civil engineering profession.

The resources section provides a full list of the activities we offer and the intended audiences. For our more popular activities, Activity Plans are available and give outline details of our activities, such as learning outcomes, length of the activity, ideal audience size, required resources and who these will be supplied by and a précis of how the event will work.
