There are a wide variety of ways in which Civil Engineering can be promoted to students. We have a range of activities available to take into schools and colleges which can be adapted to many key stages. A sample of these activities and the related key stage are outlined below.
The Little Book of Civilisation is published by ICE as part of its ongoing campaign to boost public understanding of the huge contribution civil engineers make to society. With a recent Royal Academy of Engineering/Engineering Technology Board study concluding that 2 in 3 young people know very little about engineering and almost 3 in 4 don’t understand what engineers actually do, the illustrated booklet and film clip provides a valuable tool for young people, their teachers, careers advisers and parents.
Building on the success of the first edition of the Little Book of Civilisation published in 2005, the Little Book of Civilisation is available both online and in hardcopy and includes 16 exciting new real-life case studies including the Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED),York Eco Depot and Wembley. Also available is a film clip exploring case studies from both the first and second editions.
Case study content and production support was provided by 13 prominent industry players including Skanska, Ramboll Whitbybird, Royal Haskoning, Carillion, Balfour Beatty, Arup, Atkins, Faber Maunsell, Mott MacDonald, Halcrow, Colas, Thames Water and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association.
