School ambassadors

ICE Yorkshire and Humber works with STEMNET and Construction Skills to promote civil engineering to young people.

One of the most successful ways we are able to achieve this is by working in schools and our Regional Education Team has a proven track record of delivering exciting, educational activities in school, dating back to 1998. If school visits are not your cup of tea, there are many other ways you can help to promote civil engineering, such as becoming involved with many of the Regional ICE Committees, the Branch Committee or our Special Interest Groups.

Obviously you will be aware that there is ongoing concern about society’s perception of Civil Engineers and the numbers of new professionals entering our industry. The future of civil engineering and society’s perceptions rests with the current generation!

Membership of the Education Team is open to members of all grades so, if becoming involved in this initiative interests you, please take time to review the additional information accessed via the links on this page. These give information about: becoming an Ambassador; our current Activity Diary to give you a flavour of the events we are hoping to support; the Ambassador Registration Form; ICE’s Education Policy and the range of activities we can deliver.

Why become an Ambassador?

  • Be a better engineer
  • Work with professionals with different expertise from other organisations
  • Enhance your networking and communication skills
  • Build your confidence
  • Further your professional development
  • Planning skills
  • Organisation skills
  • Problem-solving
  • Time management
  • Proactive creative thinking
  • People management

Involvement in such activities are part of your Continuing Professional Development and if you are working to become a qualified member you may even be able to satisfy one or more parts of Development Objectives.

  • Enthuse about engineering
  • Show how science, maths and technology relate to everyday life
  • Demonstrate that engineering needs dynamic young people with wide-ranging skills and abilities
  • Encourage more young people to study science and maths and pursue science and engineering careers
  • Improve educational achievement in science and maths subjects

An important aspect of volunteering your time is the 'feel good factor' one experiences from seeing students benefit from your involvement.

ICE fully supports the SEA scheme and encourages all volunteers to register to gain maximum benefit from a Criminal Record Bureau’s (CRB) Disclosure process (ensuring no previous history of child related offences). Additional benefits include personal liability insurance cover of up to £5M and training via SETPOINT (one day) or ConstructionSkills (two days). There are no costs associated with either of the courses or the CRB process, upon the understanding that ICE Ambassadors take part in at least two activities per year as “repayment” for this free training.
