Part one

The Role of the Director and the Board
2 days + 1 day of post course e-learning

The Role of Company Director and the Board will explain how a board should operate, the directors´ personal and collective responsibilities, duties, key tasks and legal liabilities. It will also detail why directors and board meetings are different from managers´, executives´ and operational meetings.

The course will:

  1. Explain key duties, roles and responsibilities of directors, corporate governance and the board´s role
  2. Distinguish the crucial differences between management, direction and ownership
  3. Explain how to help improve board effectiveness

Finance for Non-Financial Directors
3 days

Finance for Non-Financial Directors aims to emphasise and develop an understanding of the role of finance in supporting the agreed strategies and in monitoring and controlling performance.

The course will:

  1. Explain how to understand and interpret the terminology and concepts used in finance
  2. Evaluate and monitor the financial health of a business – spotting the warning signs
  3. Evaluate new business plans with confidence

Strategic Business Direction
2 days + 1 day of post course e-learning

Strategic Business Direction is designed to develop an understanding of the role of strategy in defining and agreeing the future potential of the organisation and helps develop skills in strategy formulation, implementation and management.

The course will:

  1. Provide an introduction to the key ideas and approaches to strategic direction
  2. Define the role and responsibility of the strategic group in strategic thinking and analysis, strategic choice and in the implementation of strategy
  3. Offer an external expert perspective in a risk-free environment

People Mean Business
1 day

People Mean Business explores the issues of aligning human resource strategies to business goals. It looks at the professional frameworks within which directors can enhance the investment made in people, so adding value to the business.

The course will:

  1. Give an understanding of how to reassess and align human resource policies and practices in the light of corporate strategy
  2. Demonstrate how to gain competitive advantage through people
  3. Define the role and responsibility of the board in integrating human resource strategy with the corporate strategy

Effective Marketing Strategies
1 day

Effective Marketing Strategies provides an overview of the principles of marketing strategy, looking at why marketing is important, how marketing strategies are devised, implemented and controlled in order to create customer value and improve the company´s market performance.

The course will:

  1. Examine how marketing can support and fulfill the objectives of corporate strategy
  2. Offer expert advice to help formulate marketing strategies and develop the plans to make them work
  3. Define the role and responsibility of the board in determining marketing strategy

Leading Strategic Change
1 day

We live in a turbulent business environment. Deciding how to respond to the pressures for business change is critical for more organisations and leading the strategic change is the responsibility of every director.

The course will:

  1. Define the role of the board in leading the organisation and creating a culture committed to change
  2. Describe the strategic issues, opportunities and pressures for change which exist in the business environment and within organisations
  3. Develop the process of planning and implementing strategic change and decision making within the organisation

Part two

Developing Board Performance
3 days

Delegates will consider a combination of subjects simultaneously and test application of subject matter through a simulation based scenario that develops over the duration of the three days. Delegates will receive both peer and tutor feedback on their approaches and solutions to the situations presented, which will focus on board and director dilemmas and issues.
