Frequently Asked Questions

The Framework will be available from the 7 November, 2011.

For additional guidance on the Competency Framework, please see the recorded Competency Framework Webinar

How much time should I allow to complete the framework

There are three competency sections to the framework: Practice; Behavioural; Contextual. You should aim to spend between 20-30minutes for each competency area. You should also allow a further 30minutes to review your results and the suggested development interventions.

There are too many questions on the Competency Framework and takes a long time to complete. Why is this the case?

In order to assess your competency and allow a level of self reflection there needs to be this amount of questions to draw a clear answer to your development needs. The framework is about self development and the more you are able to self reflect when answering the questions, the more beneficial the output.

Why do a lot of the questions seem to be repeated in the different Competency Areas?

Though the question seems to be the same, the competency area will be different; thus, the context the question is in will be reflected in the final development intervention outputs.

A lot of the questions are vague and are not set in context. Why?

The questions are designed to make you question yourself and think of all the different situations the question may apply and how you deal with each situation. Even though the question may depend on a certain circumstance, we want you to think of how you are or how you deal with things overall.

Why is the Competency Framework for members only and for those who are at Post Professional Review?

The framework is a member benefit; it will help to target and lead you to development opportunities. The outputs highlight all the suitable ICE development interventions that will help our members to progress their Personal Competency. It is aimed at those who are at Post Professional Review level because the questions assume a certain level of awareness/ competency is already achieved through the ICE’s formal review process and requirements.

Can the Competency Framework Assessment be used by Graduates and Students?

Yes, Graduates and Students can use the Competency Framework Assessment; however, they must bear in mind that there are some competencies that they are still developing and not all the questions may relate to them and their level. The outputs will help to benefit the Graduates and Student no matter what.

Can the Competency Framework Assessment be seen by others through MyICE?

No, the assessment will not be seen by others. The framework is private and confidential, and will not be used by the ICE as part of any performance measurement or advancement process. Though we will not access individual assessments, the ICE’s Learned Society will gain an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of members overall and hope to use this information to target more member benefits e.g. free events, conferences, best practice material.

How often am I expected to complete it and why?

The assessment should be used to help you set out your personal development goals. You can complete the assessment how ever frequently you would like. The development intervention outputs will be updated regularly by the ICE and will offer you up to date events, articles, quick tips that may help you. As a guide, you should aim to complete the assessment every 6 months and (if suitable) can be used to help you prior to your organisation’s review process.

Does this count towards my CPD hours?

Yes, the development intervention outputs in each of the sections will help you with your CPD hours. There are physical events, online events, further reading etc that you can use to continue your professional development and can be logged down in your CPD hours.
