Further Study & Funding Options

You may decide to undertake further study for a wide range of reasons which could be due to the current lack of opportunities available, to increase your job prospects or maybe because you have a strong passion for a specific subject.

Postgraduate Funding Opportunity

Anglo-Danish Society - Ove Arup Foundation Scholarship
For the academic year 2012-13 the Anglo-Danish Society are administering a scholarship sponsored by the Ove Arup Foundation to a postgraduate within the area of the "Built Environment"

Whatever your reason for considering further study the ICE has provided some guidance below you may find useful.

Further learning – what is it, and why do it?

What is it?

Further Learning is a ‘top-up’ to your initial qualification(s) that broadens your knowlege and increases your eligibility for professionally qualified membership with the ICE and Engineering Council. It is typically provided by an academic course provider but can in some instances be obtained by study within the workplace.

Why do it?

Further Learning can increase your eligibility level for future professionally qualified membership with the ICE and Engineering Council. This may be beneficial to your future career; it increases your chances of employment; and it is a positive action to take during the recession.

Examples of Further Learning?

  • Chartered/Incorporated Engineer - a BEng(Hons)/BSc (Hons) degree would meet the academic requirement for IEng but would require Further Learning to meet the requirement for CEng
  • IEng/EngTech – a HNC/HND or Foundation Degree would meet the academic requirement for EngTech but would require Further Learning to meet the requirement for IEng
  • Other qualifications that satisfy the educational base for an Engineering Technician such as approved NC/ND or NVQ level III or IV will also require Further Learning to top-up the award to satisfy the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer.

What courses are available?

It is recommended that you take a JBM approved Further Learning course if your initial qualification is accredited at a level lower than your desired level of Engineering Council registration.

Full time, part time, distance learning or evening courses are available so you can continue to look for employment or take on a job at the same time (in Civil Engineering, or just a holding job to pay the fees and living expenses!).
