Educational Base

The starting point for any aspiring member will be their academic achievement which the ICE refers to as the educational base. The education base for each membership grade is different and is usually linked to a formal academic qualification, although the standard can be satisfied by a number of alternative routes.

Engineering Technician (EngTech) TMICE

Educational Base (required academic qualifications)
BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in one of the Construction Pathways, or an approved Scottish/National Vocational Qualification (S/NVQ) - level 3
Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for Technicians (Institution of Civil Engineers) (QCF)
Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (QCF) formerly BTEC ND)
Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering)(QCF) formerly BTEC ND)
Diploma/Certificate (HND/C) will also be acceptable.
Completion of an approved higher qualification e.g. relevant Foundation degree, Higher National
If you hold an overseas degree please use the course search to check your eligibility. If your course is not listed you may need to apply for an academic assessment.

 

Incorporated Engineer (IEng) MICE

Educational Base (required academic qualifications)
Approved HNC/HND or a qualification assessed to be equivalent  Further Learning appropriate to initial qualification
Accredited BSc, BEng (Hons), MEng automatically satisfies both parts
Or a qualification assessed to be of an equivalent standard following an Academic Assessment.
Approved HNC/D in engineering prior to 1999 entry may meet the educational base. Please use the course search to verify the recognition given.

Chartered Engineer (CEng) MICE

Educational Base (required academic qualifications)
Accredited BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) or a qualification assessed to be of an equivalent standard following an Academic Assessment. Further Learning appropriate to initial qualification
Accredited MEng - automatically satisfies both parts
Accredited degrees in engineering prior to 1999 entry may meet the educational base. Please use the course search to verify the recognition given.

MICE/AMICE

Educational Base (required academic qualifications)
MICE (without Engineering Council registration
 
UK Bachelors degree or equivalent in any subject*
AMICE (not eligible for Engineering Council registration but may be eligible for registration as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)) UK Bachelors degree or equivalent in any subject*
*In determining the equivalence of an overseas qualifications to a UK bachelor degree we refer to the NARIC database.


The educational base can also be satisfied by one, or a combination of the following:


Accredited courses
- Accredited course or a combination of accredited courses at the appropriate level.

Further learning - Complete a period of further learning to fill the gap between your initial accredited qualification and the educational base listed above.

Academic Assessment - A non-accredited qualification or package of qualifications that has been assessed via the Academic Assessment process to be of an equivalent standard to the required educational base listed above.

Technical Report Route - Technical Report Route (TRR) for candidates with significant practical experience that do not meet the educational base for their desired level of Membership.
