What is Further Learning

Further Learning (FL) is the term used to describe the additional work needed to complete the educational base which you need to become professionally qualified. It fills the gap between your initial accredited or individually assessed academic qualification and the educational base (link) needed to register as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.

Do I need Further Learning?

This depends on the grade of Membership you wish to attain; for example, regarding the academic requirements for:

  • Chartered/Incorporated Engineer - a BEng(Hons)/BSc (Hons) degree would meet the academic requirement for IEng but would require Further Learning to meet the requirement for CEng
  • IEng/EngTech – a HNC/HND/Foundation Degree ould meet the academic requirement for EngTech but would require Further Learning to meet the requirement for IEng

These qualifications are the current exemplar qualifications based on UK SPEC requirements. Any one completing a course before 1999 should use the course search to check their eligibility as Further Learning may not be required.

How can I complete Further Learning?

If you have completed an initial qualification and been informed that you need to complete Further Learning to meet your desired educational base, there are two ways to achieve this, as outlined below:
