What is Work-Based Further Learning?

Work-Based Further Learning is a structured means of using knowledge gained through work experience in order to demonstrate the new learning you have achieved and therefore enhance your existing qualifications so that you can meet the educational base required for registration with the Engineering Council (EngC) at Incorporated or Chartered level.

How can Work Based Further Learning be used?

Work based Further Learning can be used to enhance a:

  • HNC/D or Foundation Degree towards registration at Incorporated Engineer level
  • BEng (Hons) degree towards registration at Chartered Engineer level
  • BSc (hons) degree accredited for IEng

Work Based Further Learning options

There are three options that you could decide to follow: -

1. Employer Managed Further Learning
2. Self Managed Further Learning
3. Technical Report Route

1. Employer Managed Further Learning

Graduates join a Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) approved programme which requires them, with the help of a professional engineer acting as a Supervisor, to plan, record and reflect on specific work experiences to demonstrate the additional new learning achieved. This is different to an ICE Company Approved Training Scheme (CATS) , which helps you complete you Initial Professional Development stage and focuses on training rather than education.

  • Check to see if your company has an approved Employer Managed Further Learning programme for IEng or CEng:
  • To find out more about Employer-Managed Further Learning please read the guidelines on the JBM website.

2. Self Managed Further Learning

This option is also work-based but, in this instance, the graduate has minimal support from a professional engineer acting as a Supervisor, usually because the employer does not offer a Further Learning Programme . The process is assessed and monitored by the ICE's Academic Qualifications Panel rather than the JBM, but otherwise is virtually identical to an Employer-Managed Further Learning Programme.

3. Technical Report Route (TRR)

If you do not hold the required educational base for your desired grade of membership or Engineering Council registration, you may be able to apply via the Technical Report Route. The Technical Report Route (TRR) will allow you to use the academic knowledge gained by other means, including your work experience, to compensate for the lack of the required educational base without completing a period of formal study.
