Saltire Society Civil Engineering Award 2012
The Forth Rail Bridge and the M74 Completion Project were jointly awarded the prestigious 2012 Saltire Award for Civil Engineering reflecting the high quality of entries received.
The 17 award entries encompassed the full range of civil engineering projects ranging from flood prevention schemes and road improvements to bridge refurbishment and building works and reinforced awareness that our quality of life depends on high quality infrastructure designed and built by civil engineers right across our country.
The Forth Bridge Restoration Project has seen the iconic structure fully restored over the past ten years. The description of a never-ending job being like 'painting the Forth Bridge' no longer holds true thanks to an ingenious new approach involving extensive scaffold access and protective encapsulation before the bridge was grit blasted and painted with a three-part protective coating.
The M74 Completion Project supplied the vital missing link in the West of Scotland's motorway network. The project delivered eight kilometres of dual three-lane motorway linking the existing M74 to the M8 and provided an alternative strategic route across Glagow and West Central Scotland. The scale of this motorway project is staggering with many of the structures along its route worthy of an award in their own right with one bridge boasting an even greater span than the Kingston Bridge.
Heather Reid, with Richard Coackley, President of the Institution of Civil Engineers presented 2012's Saltire Society Civil Engineering Awards at a ceremony held at the Glasgow Science Centre's IMAX Theatre in October 2012.
