Training Agreements

ICE recommends that you join an Approved Training Scheme. It provides a commitment by your employer to mentor and provide a structured, formal approach to completing your Initial Professional Developemtn (IPD) and the requirements of the ICE Development Objectives within Development Objectives for EngTech TMICE / AMICE / MICE and IEng MICE / CEng MICE.

ICE Approved Training Scheme

Below is a search tool which you can use to identify organisations whose training schemes are approved by ICE (where a website is available, it is shown; where no website is listed, a telephone number is provided):

Training Agreements

To join a scheme, an individual must enter into a Training Agreement (TA) which links the trainee, the employer and ICE. Whilst an employer will operate such a scheme, ICE, through its Regional Support Teams (RST) (for UK based companies and in Hong Kong), will audit it and provide active assistance and guidance to the trainee.

Non UK-based trainees may still register a TA. However, outside the UK and Hong Kong, no local RST support is available. This is provided by the Professional Development Manager at ICE London.

Both the employer and trainee are required to make commitments which are formalised in an agreement. The same agreement is then registered with ICE. Please note that you must have your employer’s permission to register a training agreement.

For further information, consult Training Agreement guidance.

The TA facilitates the achievement of the Development Objectives for EngTech TMICE / AMICE / MICE and IEng MICE / CEng MICE. Completion of the TA is verified by means of the Training Review and, depending on the grade of membership, can take approximately two to four years.

Online training agreement registrations/transfers

Provided your employer has registered for this facility, trainees may register and transfer training agreements online. You can confirm if your employer is enabled for online registration via our Approved Employers Search tool.
Before you register your TA with us online, you should meet with your registered Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE) (see Training Agreement guidance) to agree that they will support you throughout your training agreement. You will need the membership number of the SCE to complete the registration, which should be obtained when you both meet.

Apply online

Applying online to register your TA is easy to complete: just follow the link below.

Apply to register your Training Agreement

The organisation’s training scheme administrator will provide you with detailed instructions on how to use the online system. If your employer has not signed up to the online facility, you may still apply by completing the paper Training Agreement application form. It is recommended that you use the pay online facility which will produce proof of payment. Please note that ICE does not raise invoices for this fee and expects payment with application.
