Phil Jackson IS Panel Chair gave a BIM presentation to the ICE Surrey South East Region. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the latest buzz word in Civil Engineering. By 2016, all public projects will have to implement BIM. What will this mean for the way we design, construct and manage projects? In this seminar, Phil discusses:
- What BIM is, and what it is not?
- Why BIM is important to the industry?
- How BIM will integrate different project processes?
This excellent presentation is available to watch on the ICE CPD Lectures website.

Included Heikki Kulusjärvi online from Finland -Managing Director for Solibri, a software company whose business is totally based on open BIM. He had the following comments post the meeting: "The strong support from the government is a great starting point, but there is of course much more to be done. Singapore is a good example of this. They have a huge governmental support even subsidising 50% of BIM related training and BIM software purchases. In spite of this practioners (architects and engineers) are still hesitating as they need to see the benefit for themselves. In UK educating people to better understand the benefits for themselves is the key for success. I got the impression that ICE already is working actively on training etc which is great. Also successful BIM case stories are good. The discussion about COBie was also quite interesting."
A great example of BIM for overall management of the estate – illustrating full life cycle of information – through project and into asset management. Nigel Stroud will talk us through how BAA has organised its IM and engaged the supply chain to deliver projects which comply with BAA’s overall asset management requirements – and how this has been under-pinned by Heathrow Maps Live.
