Municipal Engineering is concerned with municipal infrastructure. This involves the provision of safe and efficient transport and drainage infrastructure through quality service delivered by means of initial strategy, cost effective management, maintenance and improvement of these networks. It involves developing engineering solutions and practices that have regard to the value of the natural and built environment and to the principle of sustainable development. It also involves working with others to regenerate communities and to actively promote and implement programmes designed to bring derelict and contaminated land back into beneficial use.

Municipal Engineers are involved with the management of the whole of the public domain and in working towards a safer environment through positive measures to reduce road accidents and to protect and provide for the more vulnerable road user. They represent and safeguard highway user’s interests against developers’ activities and development detrimental to users and they encourage, with others, the provision and use of public transport. By these various means, the overall aim of Municipal Engineers is to protect the environment and to enhance opportunities for work and leisure.

Municipal Engineers form a key part of the management team coordinating and liaising with others from overlapping and complementary design and construction disciplines. Some are employed directly by municipal authorities, whilst others work for Consultancies and Public Utilities.
