John Mitchell Lecture

The John Mitchell Award was established in 2008 as a medal and lectureship in memory of John Mitchell. 

The award recognises an exceptional paper in the field of geotechnical engineering on the themes of site-based innovation or geotechnical safety. The paper is presented at ICE in January and is sponsored by the BGA and the ICE.

Deep excavations in Dublin: recent developments
The 2009 Award was granted to Dr Mike Long, Senior Lecturer at University College Dublin, and Michael Looby, Director of Bryne Looby Partners.  The lecture gives an update on recent developments in deep excavations in the Dublin area, focussing on retaining wall behaviour in Dublin glacial till and Dublin boulder clay, and cantilever walls.
