Publications and proceedings

Below is a sample of ICE publications relating to ground engineering and geotechnical topics.

ICE specification for piling and embedded retaining walls (2nd edition)

The existence of a standard agreed way of executing piling works helps to reduce conflict on site and enables consultants to design more economically by having confidence in how site works will be carried out.  This publication is designed to be used as the technical specification for piling and embedded walling works, either on land or near to shore.  It documents piling techniques and procurement methods used in the foundations sector and incorpates the changes introduced by the European Standards.  Set out in 3 parts, it covers general requirements, specification requirements and guidance notes.

The Federation of Piling Specialists, in association with ICE and BGA.
Published June 2007.

Specification for tunnelling (3rd edition)

This is the de facto standard reference work for tunnelling in the UK and the rest of the world.  It reflects current industry best practice and takes account of the many advances in tunnelling over the last decade.  It includes: materials, methods, ground stabilisation processes, working environment, sprayed concrete, sprayed applied waterproof membranes and jacked box tunnelling.

The British Tunnelling Society with the ICE.
Published March 2010.

Rock engineering

This book explains the geological principles and concepts required for successful geotechnical design and engineering of underground excavations.  It offers guidance on the risks and uncertainties in ground conditions on tunnelling and underground projects.

Arild Palmstrom and Hakan Stille.
Published July 2010.

Géotechnique

Established for more than 60 years, this is the world's premier geotechnics journal, publishing the research on all aspects of geotechnical engineering.  This regular ICE peer-reviewed journal provides papers across the fields of soil and rock mechanics, engineering geology and environmental geotechnics.  The Géotechnique Lecture is held bi-ennially.  The next lecture will be held in 2011 at the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Geotechnical Engineering Proceedings

This regular ICE peer-reviewed journal provides papers on all aspects of geotechnical research, design, construction and performance.  Papers include tunnelling, foundations, retaining walls, embankments, piling, soil mechanics and geoenvironmental engineering. The Geotechnical Engineering Lecture is held bi-ennially.  The next lecture is Wednesday 22nd September 2010 at the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Ground Improvement Proceedings

This journal publishes peer-reviewed papers relating to all aspects of ground improvement, ground reinforcement and grouting.  It covers a wide range of applications including analytical advances, performance evaluations, pilot and model studies, instrumented case-histories and innovative applications of existing technology.
