Building Information Modelling

The ICE Information Systems (IS) Panel have been very proactive in the topical subject that is Building Information Modelling.

In March 2011 Paul Morrell, The Government’s Chief Construction Advisor, presented a BIS commissioned industry working group’s final report on the potential future use of BIM. This included a suggested roadmap and strategy to enable the progressive use of BIM on Government building programmes.  The Government’s May 2011 Construction Strategy announced the Government's intention to require collaborative 3D BIM with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic on its projects by 2016.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) supports the use of BIM on construction projects and recognises the important potential benefits of improved whole life costing and carbon performance.  The ICE is keen to see BIM applied to infrastructure projects in a way that works well for different infrastructure segments and client groups and delivers intended benefits.

ICE Project Proposal:

The ICE is proposing to deliver a project that secures the engagement of the different segments of UK infrastructure in the adoption of BIM and its consequent delivery of benefits. This will require the creation of clear links between the Government’s BIM and Construction Strategies and each infrastructure segment’s asset planning, creation and operational characteristics. The ICE Information Systems Panel has been instrumental in creating an ICE BIM Action Group to steer forward this proposal. See About BIM and BIM Action Group.
