Engineering Management in a Digital Economy

The use of technology to capture, share, and manipulate information is an established cornerstone of our society and economy.

Challenges in the digital economy require multi-disciplinary input across a broad spectrum of subjects including engineering.

ICE is engaged in this programme, and the IS Panel has been bringing together leading academic researchers and professional practitioners to advance understanding in key areas related to information systems.

Translating research into practice is crucial as there is currently insufficient learning between the academic and practice communities. Therefore the IS Panel seeks to provide major benefits through its work by enabling cross-learning between parties.

ICE previously hosted an event 'Engineering Management in a Digital Economy: Research & Practice' in 2010, which considered the challenges of information management. International speakers included Professor Martin Fisher (Stanford) and Professor Rafael Sacks and there was a special presentation on ‘Policy, government procurement and engineering management in the digital economy’, by Paul Morrell, Chief Construction Advisor, BIS. Through the proposed activities the ICE will help civil engineers remain at the forefront of internationally excellent practice.

In addition, the IS Panel has been actively involved with the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) to implement a new set of guidelines for the teaching of information systems in first degree programmes and periods of further learning within the construction industry.
