ICE's Management Panel supports two management competitions.
MERIT is an acronym for Management, Enterprise, Risk, Innovation and Teamwork. It is a Construction Management Simulation (CMS) that provides the essentials for construction professionals to augment their technical knowledge, with the managerial skills required to run a modern construction company.
Participants group together in teams of up to 6 to run their own fictional company, making decisions that affect the key functions of the business. MERIT is organised and run by Loughborough University, and supported by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Construction Industry Training Board, and a number of industrial partners.
2012 saw the 22nd MERIT competition being held at Lougborough University. The competition is supported by the Institution of Civil Engineers and CITB ConstructionSkills and was first run in 1988.
The 2012 prizes go to:
- ARUP’s Impossible Mission Force (Overall Winners)
- Aurecon (Australia) (Sponsorship Award)

The Management Panel support MERIT by providing a judge (usually the ICE/ICES Management Panel Chair) who presents the winning team with a silver salver.
Teambuild is an annual competition where young professionals in the construction industry are challenged to compete in a simulation of the design and construction process for the development of a real construction site.
ICE has supported Teambuild for 14 years. The Management Panel’s current commitment to the competition is in the form of annual £3000 sponsorship, as well as providing a judge – usually the ICE/ICES Management Panel Chair – for the competition final.
