Government legislation has a significant impact on the water and wastewater sector. It sets the parameters within which the experts in the sector must work.
The examples of legislation published here are illustrative rather than comprehensive.
Flood & Water Management Bill
This bill gained Royal Ascent in April 2010. The intention of the Act is to implement several key recommendations of Sir Michael Pitt’s Review of the Summer 2007 floods, protect water supplies to consumers, and protect community groups from excessive charges for surface water drainage.
Water Framework Directive (WFD)
This became law in the UK in 2003, having originated from the European Water Framework Directive of 2000. The WFD focuses on enhancing the quality of surface freshwater, groundwater, estuaries, and coastal waters. It also has a very strong focus on managing and improving the ecosystem.
