Minworth sewage treatment works

As a part of their West Midlands regional visit the ICE Water Panel were invited to Severn Trent’s Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in Minworth.

Minworth STW is Severn Trent’s largest Sewage Treatment Works and serves a population equivalent of 1.75million. The plant treats sludge from a population equivalent of 2.5million, due to the large volume of imports it receives from the surrounding areas. In AMP 4 £145million was spent upgrading the works.

The Water Panel was hosted by Paul Fisher and Ian Moore at Severn Trent. They provided a short presentation about the work that had been undertaken at Minworth before Paul escorted the panel on a tour of site. The site was vast and the innovation and engineering ingenuity that has gone into making the sewage treatment works sustainable is incredibly impressive.

On returning from the site visit the panel was treated to lunch and an excellent presentation on the flood alleviation project that has taken place at Mythe Wastewater Treatment Works. Mythe WTW provides clean water to 350,000 people; however, during the 2007 floods the works flooded and supply was severely disrupted and even temporarily lost. Since then Costain and Severn Trent have embarked on a major flood alleviation project to improve the resilience of our supply from the site.
