The ICE London Transport Panel has responded to the Silvertown Tunnel Consultation, the proposed new twin-bore, dual carriageway road tunnel beneath the River Thames linking the A102 on the Greenwich Peninsula to the Tidal Basin Roundabout in the Royal Docks area.
In their response, the Panel come out in support the proposals saying the new Silvertown Tunnel will be "crucial" in ensuring local boroughs in the east of London are prepared for the dramatic increase in predicted population growth.
However, the Panel acknowledges that there was an issue with air quality around the entrance of the Silvertown Tunnel and call on Transport for London (TfL) to act to mitigate the worst affected areas and to examine how possible green infrastructure, continual monitoring and warnings could ensure health risks from increased air pollution are kept as low as possible.
The document also asks TfL to consider how the new Tunnel could adapt to emerging technologies, for example driverless cars and autonomous vehicles, in the future.
