Buildings, Structures & Materials Community of Practice

The Buildings, Structures & Materials Community of Practice (COP) aims to support the ICE in developing and promoting best practice in design and construction for its Structures & Geotechnical knowledge programme.

The COP provides a network of technical experts who are committed to supporting ICE's activity in the buildings & structures sector.

The COP is coordinated by a leadership group who works with ICE staff to deliver a wealth of engineering knowledge. This includes:

  • Supporting the Institution’s professional development activity and projects as part of ICE’s Structures & Geotechnical knowledge programme
  • Supporting research, events, networking for engineers in the sector
  • Influencing ICE's policy statements in areas such as buildings, tunnels, bridges and other structural infrastructure

Structures & Geotechnical Community Advisory Board

Our Communities of Practice are provided with guidance and direction from Community Advisory Boards, who have been tasked by ICE Council with driving the development of the Institution’s knowledge programme and insights activity in alignment with key elements of the Institution’s strategic plan.

This COP primarily supports our Structures & Geotechnical Community Advisory Board, spearheaded by Alison Norrish, Infrastructure Project Director, Arup, who specialises in tunnelling and underground construction, and leads the design of major infrastructure projects in the rail, road and aviation sectors.

Join the Community

ICE needs your help to build and develop its expert technical and practical knowledge. As an expert member of the community, you will be able to share knowledge, thoughts and experiences with like-minded professionals and collaborate with others to help achieve the community’s vision.

Communication between the COP shall be facilitated through a dedicated Microsoft Teams group, providing the opportunity to communicate with ICE and professionals with a shared interest in the COP’s objectives.

If you are committed to supporting the development of knowledge, standards, insights, policy and guidance for this area, then we want to hear from you.
