The Community of Practice (COP) seeks to support ICE’s knowledge programmes, insights and policy development for urban infrastructure to build our communities, towns and cities.
The COP provides a network of technical experts who are committed to supporting ICE's activity for engineers and built environment professionals.
Activity in the COP is coordinated by a leadership group who works with ICE staff to support the development of activity and the COP network. This includes:
Transport & Mobility Community Advisory Board
Our Communities of Practice are provided with guidance and direction from Community Advisory Boards, who have been tasked by ICE Council with driving the development of the Institution’s knowledge programme and insights activity in alignment with key elements of the Institution’s strategic plan.
The Municipal Engineering COP primarily supports activity for our Transport & Mobility Community Advisory Board, spearheaded by Rand Watkins CEng FICE, Atkins, who is an experienced leader of multidisciplinary teams in the engineering and construction sector, specialising in building diverse and collaborative teams to deliver safe, efficient, quality design.

John Thomson (past Chairman and current standing member of the Municipal Engineering Expert Panel) represents the ICE Municipal panel and the UK on the International Federation of Municipal Engineers (IFME). IFME is an organisation that fosters technical and cultural exchange of information, innovations, skills and experience between municipal and public works engineers worldwide. ICE's link to IFME is important as it increases awareness and understanding across differing cultures.
John has produced a number of papers showcasing municipal best practice in countries like Denmark and Canada as well as the UK. John took over as President of IFME in August 2018, at the congress held in Kansas, USA. Watch this space as ICE will be hosting the IFME Triennial Congress in 2021. John will be working closely with the ICE international team to push forward ICE's agenda internationally.
