Election of one Graduate member to the ICE Council 2024

Candidate statements

Anastasios Andrianopoulos MSC GMICE BTSYM MCIHT

Tunnels and structures advisor, National Highways

“If elected, I pledge to strengthen the bridge between ICE and fresh graduates by organising more career fairs and advocating for a more inclusive chartership route. My goal is to ensure equal opportunities for all engineers, championing diversity and inclusivity in our profession.”

As a civil engineer specialising in National Highways Safety Engineering Standards (SES) Tunnels, with a Master's in Structural Design and Construction Management, I bring a wealth of experience to the table. My contributions to the development of standards like CD352, CS452, and CM430, alongside my role in reviewing Approvals In Principal (AIP) and Options reports for National Highways Tunnels, demonstrate my commitment to excellence and innovation in engineering.

I've actively engaged in initiatives promoting sustainability and diversity within the industry, such as my involvement in the Transport Research & Innovation Board Working Group and as the secretary of the Road Tunnel Operators Forum (RoTOF). Additionally, my leadership as the ICE South East East Sussex & Kent ECN chair has fostered collaboration between ICE and universities, exemplified by our recent VR event with the University of Greenwich.

If elected, I pledge to strengthen the bridge between ICE and fresh graduates by organising more career fairs and advocating for a more inclusive chartership route. My goal is to ensure equal opportunities for all engineers, championing diversity and inclusivity in our profession. Together, let's build a more sustainable, diverse, and inclusive future for civil engineering.

Eleanor Lawton GMICE

Graduate engineer, SSE Renewables.

“I am committed to share my knowledge with the wider audience through regular STEM involvement and active participation in ICE events. Currently, I am the treasurer and social lead of the Glasgow and West of Scotland branch and I recently presented on the topic of offshore wind at ICE Scotland’s AGM”

With the assistance of the ICE council and the support of 100,000 members, I believe I will be able to contribute to influencing meaningful progress that aligns with the ICE’s purpose of improving lives.

In the renewables sector, I engage in various engineering sub-disciplines, witnessing the evolution to tackle contemporary challenges. This daily exposure to climate change impacts is what has led me to this application as I want to help drive the transition to Net Zero communities and countries.

I am committed to share my knowledge with the wider audience through regular STEM involvement and active participation in ICE events. Currently, I am the treasurer and social lead of the Glasgow and West of Scotland branch and I recently presented on the topic of offshore wind at ICE Scotland’s AGM.

We all have a part to play in questioning our own current practices, how they can be improved and how we can maximise the impact of our profession. Collectively we need to explore outside of our comfort zone and see what collaborations with other industries can lead to and ensure the progression of the ICE and increase its positive impact on our future.

Ruth Marsden MEng GMICE

Assistant design manager, BAM.

“If elected, I will represent and demonstrate the views of early careers members, champion our opinions, and continue driving progress in areas of particular importance – for example, CPD and professional development support, and improving inclusion within the industry.”

Through my five years volunteering at a variety of levels for the ICE, I have gained a deep understanding for how the institution operates and drives real change within both our industry and wider society. While chair of the ICE’s international Early Careers Network, I prioritised enhancing the diverse perspectives offered by graduate, student, and apprentice members through collaborative workshops and by creating networking opportunities. I identified and established new ECNet relationships, notably with the President’s Future Leaders and the ICE’s Policy and External Affairs Committee. I have represented ECNet at council and trustee board meetings, and this experience has allowed me to comfortably communicate with leading members of the Institution.

If elected, I will represent and demonstrate the views of early careers members, champion our opinions, and continue driving progress in areas of particular importance – for example, CPD and professional development support, and improving inclusion within the industry.

My dedication to the institution is proven, and I am determined and motivated to continue contributing to our industry. Please vote for me to ensure the voice of early careers members continues to be heard; together, let’s shape the future of our profession!
