As part of ICE’s Learning Society role this Community of Practice aims to be the leading source of expert civil engineering knowledge for practitioners working to design, construct and manage our transport infrastructure assets.
The Community of Practice (COP) for Transport aims to act as a network for engineers and infrastructure professionals to share knowledge and insights between like-minded professionals, and to support the development of knowledge, insights and policy for the sector.
Members of this COP will be informed of forthcoming ICE projects and activity within our transport & mobility knowledge programme and presented with the opportunity to participate by:
- Responding to research activity, or the development of standards
- Provide feedback on, or raise, issues of policy
- Suggest future professional development activity, content and event speakers
- Potentially work on projects with both ICE staff and fellow professionals with a shared interest and passion that help contribute to reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goal targets for Sustainable Transport
Transport & Mobility Community Advisory Board
Our Communities of Practice are provided with guidance and direction from Community Advisory Boards, who have been tasked by ICE Council with driving the development of the Institution’s knowledge programme and insights activity in alignment with key elements of the Institution’s strategic plan.
The Transport & Mobility Community Advisory Board is spearheaded by Rand Watkins CEng FICE, Atkins, who is an experienced leader of multidisciplinary teams in the engineering and construction sector, specialising in building diverse and collaborative teams to deliver safe, efficient, quality design.

ICE needs your help to help us build and develop its expert technical and practical knowledge.
Sustainable transport infrastructure is a key element of ICE’s strategic objectives, and to achieve our targets we are inviting engineers and infrastructure professionals to join the community of practice for transport.
As an expert member of the community, you will be able to share knowledge, thoughts and experiences with like-minded professionals and collaborate with others to help achieve the community’s vision.
COP members do not have to be ICE members, but they must have appropriate knowledge skills and expertise in alignment with the vision of the relevant community.
Communication between the COP shall be facilitated through a dedicated Microsoft Teams group, providing the opportunity to communicate with ICE and professionals with a shared interest in the COP’s objectives.
