The Robert Stephenson Awards provide an opportunity for civil engineers in the region to celebrate all aspects of their achievements, whether related to projects or people.

Robert Stephenson Awards

ICE North East presents the Robert Stephenson Awards (RSAs) every year as a celebration of civil engineering excellence in the region.

Awards are made to recognise particular merit, physical achievement, innovation or ingenuity. Projects can include research work, technical papers or built infrastructure.

The Robert Stephenson Awards

Our 2022 Robert Stephenson Awards are now closed but our 2023 awards will open in the autumn.

Project categories

Based on estimated or actual construction costs, the categories are:

  1. Large Project: value over £5million
  2. Medium Project: value £1m-£5m
  3. Small Project: value under £1m

Awards Ceremony

The winners of our annual Robert Stephenson Awards are presented at a prestigious awards ceremony as part of our Annual Dinner. The 2023 Annual Dinner and Awards evening is scheduled for Thursday 23 March.

Individual Awards

The regional STEM Ambassador of the Year Award, Volunteer of the Year Award and Chair's Special Recognition Awards are presented as part of the annual awards ceremony.

Innovative technical solution to the coastal wall has been drawn from collaboration and partnership between client and local supply chain, which contributed to the completion of the project on time and budget.”

“There were some significant environmental constraints which were easier to determine severity from presentation than written submission. Covid and Brexit had significant impact on delivery which were overcome by collaboration, planning and a lifecycle approach to deliver on-time and to budget.”

Ponteland Flood Alleviation Scheme

Comments from the judging panel: “This is a great scheme and an example of real challenges to the transport sector. The project consisted of building a 141-metre span flyover, new local road connections and public rights of way. This project is being used by others as an example hence leaving a real legacy.”

Wolsingham STW Growth

Comments from the judging panel: “This was a great all-round example of the use of principles of Project 13 for the betterment of the whole project. True sustainability was achieved by working together. The team at Wolsingham brought forward real innovation in the utilisation of offsite build bringing health, safety, sustainability, and carbon benefits alongside futureproofing of the scheme.”
