What will the project deliver?

EGIP is a comprehensive package of improvements to Scotland's railway infrastructure costing £742m. It includes modernisation and upgrades to key junctions and widespread electrification including the Edinburgh-Glasgow route and to Stirling and Dunblane.

The Queen Street tunnel works meant the closure of the high level station during the intensive 20-week programme to renew more than 1800m of concrete slab track and 4000m of new rail. The tunnel closed on 20th March and re-opened on 7th August. The project represents 140 days of continuous working, with 50 staff per day clocking up over half a million man hours in total.

Not only did this project manage to highlight civil engineering through the #thisiscivilengineering campaign, it also managed to highlight the ability to include the QUEST scholarship programme which encourages the civil engineers of the future.

During the Queen Street tunnel works, now added to Morgan Sindall's growing list of #thisiscivilengineering bannered projects, three students were taking part in the ICE's Quest Undergraduate Scholarship. This included an eight-week work placement sponsored by Morgan Sindall – one of the alliance partners involved in EGIP.

Interesting facts

  • This is the biggest enhancement project undertaken on Scotland's railway since the Victorian era
  • Completed EGIP works include the redevelopment of Haymarket Station which was the winner of the 2015 ICE sponsored Saltire Society Civil Engineering Awards
  • 150km single track of new electrified railway
  • Edinburgh Gateway, a new station
  • Three completely redeveloped stations at Cumbernauld, Haymarket and Queen Street
  • One new electric depot, Millerhill
  • Platform extensions at four stations – Linlithgow, Polmont, Falkirk High and Croy
  • 42 minute fastest journey time on the Edinburgh-Glasgow route
  • 30% increase in capacity by 2019
