What will the project deliver?

The eight Grade II listed gardens are of significant historic interest. They display over 100 years of municipal and private gardening trends, which illustrate Felixstowe’s history as a prime east coast resort of late Victorian, Edwardian and inter-war character.

Funded by Suffolk Coastal District Council and Heritage Lottery Fund, the gardens are now a series of interconnected spaces imparting an impression of historic character, municipal quality and visual interest.

The gardens are also an important wildlife site within the town as they provide a variety of natural habitats, allowing visitors to experience the changing nature of the coast throughout the seasons.

Local impact

The project has placed the gardens as a centre-piece within a vibrant Felixstowe seafront. The restoration of this heritage asset maintains its cultural and historic significance. It is now a cherished place with residents and visitors alike and extend its accessibility and appeal to a new generation and wider audience.

Interesting facts

  • Won two awards – the prestigious Green Flag Award (recognises the best parks and green spaces across the UK) and the Green Heritage Site for its interpretation of historic features and standards of conservation
