What will the project deliver?

The scheme upgrades existing cycle routes within the city in order to increase capacity, improve safety and encourage travel by bike:

  1. The Huntingdon Road cycleway runs for 1.6km and is located on the city-bound side of Huntingdon Road in order to accommodate the morning rush hour flow towards the city.
  2. The new Hills Road cycleway runs for 1.1km on both sides of this main route and provides a link from the rail station to Addenbrookes Hospital and Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The Huntingdon Road and Hills Road Cycleway schemes provide a safe and sustainable long-term transport solution. The aim is to achieve a major change in people's choice of transport.

Interesting facts

  • 32% of commuter journeys in Cambridge are made by bike
  • The main design principle was to create and define dedicated road space for cyclists, pedestrians, bus users and motor vehicles, reducing the risk of conflicts between different road user groups.
  • The designers developed a new 'Cambridge kerb' to separate the cycleway from the road. The design provides easy access for cyclists to and from the road whilst offering a level of separation from cars and other vehicles.
  • The design introduces the concept of 'floating' bus stops. This layout (recently introduced in the UK from the Netherlands), was developed further through consultation with stakeholders and user groups to produce a design to suit local requirements
