Postwick Hub links the proposed Northern Distributor Road with the existing road network: the A47, A1042 Yarmouth Road and C829 Broadland Way and opens up land for development. The project involved building one new bridge; refurbishing an existing bridge and other road improvements (including 3 roundabouts and junctions); lighting; signs and works such as drainage and landscaping.

Norfolk County Council (NCC) awarded the contract to Birse Civils (Balfour Beatty) in October 2013. Work started on site in May 2014 and finished in December 2015. Designers for the scheme were Mott MacDonald. Together, NCC and Balfour Beatty pushed the scheme through planning applications and public enquiries.

The hardest part of the project was keeping traffic flowing on the A47 and routes into Norwich.

Targets set and achieved were:

  • No environmental incidents.
  • Kept to programme and budget.
  • Low impact on local public; residents and stakeholders, particularly around travel on the busy A47 and NCC trunk roads.
