The A483/A489 Newtown Bypass consists of 6.5km of new 2+1 carriageway and 1km of new side roads on the side of the Severn valley to the south of Newtown. Construction began in February 2016 and the bypass was open to traffic in February 2019.
The presentation on the Newtown Bypass will cover a brief history of the scheme including the route selection study, design development and statutory process. The main focus of the presentation will be on the construction stage of the bypass which will include the detailed design, the engineering challenges of moving 2.5 million tonnes of earth and rock with challenging ground conditions and topography and the construction of 11 structures and 17 culverts.
The presentation will also include the health and safety achievements, explain the environmental challenges and mitigation measures that were implemented as well as the economic, social and cultural sustainability benefits that were successfully delivered.

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and have worked in various sectors of the construction industry for over 22 years having worked for a contractor, consultants and the Welsh Government.
As the Project Director for the Welsh Government’s Transport Division, I’m responsible for delivering major trunk road improvements in North and Mid Wales. This includes developing highway schemes from route selection, through the design development and statutory process stages and then onto construction.

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 25 years in the construction industry, and prior to that I served with the Royal Engineers in HM Forces. I am a Member of ICE, a Fellow of CIHT and also have an MBA from Cardiff Business School which I did part-time.
Throughout my career I have been involved in a number of prestigious projects and gained experience in the delivery of complex engineering schemes. I have also gain experience of working on Early Contractor Involvement schemes for Welsh Government and Worcestershire County Council, successfully taking them through the Public Local Inquiry process and Planning Application and onto the construction phase.
