The A556 is a major trunk road between north Cheshire and south Manchester; between M6 junction 19 and the M56 junction 7. It carries approximately 51,500 vehicles daily, around 11% of which are lorries.
The old alignment of the A556 went past numerous properties and field entrances with direct access onto the road. As well as the two motorway junctions, there were two other major junctions that connected local roads to the old A556. All of this meant traffic was often severely congested at junctions along the route, particularly at peak times, during roadworks and following incidents such as collisions.
The new 6.5km route connects the M6 junction 19 in Tabley with the M56 junction 7 at Bowdon and was opened to traffic as planned at the beginning of March 2017. To the west of the old road alignment, a new dual carriageway now bypasses the communities of Tabley, Mere and Bucklow Hil,l before re-joining the existing route of the A556 at a point near to Bucklow Manor.
The de-trunking works on the old road alignment have now started. The road will be renamed as the B5569 and will be reduced to a single carriageway with a segregated shared user facility for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. This work is due to be completed by autumn 2017.
The A556 was a first in many respects for Highways England, first Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and Building Information Modelling adopter through detail design, construction and handover.
