This lecture will describe the progress on the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson dual-carriageway project. The scheme is dualling approximately 15km of the A6 from the M22 to the start of the Toome Bypass, and from the end of the Toome Bypass as far as Castledawson at a cost of approximately £160 million.
The first part of the presentation, delivered by David Porter of DfI will provide an overview of the aims and rationale for the improvements to the existing road. This will be followed by an overview of the design challenges faced by the consultants presented by Alec Patterson of AECOM.
The final section of the presentation delivered by Gareth McLaverty of the Graham Farrans Joint Venture, will concentrate on the technical and operational advances of the scheme including social clauses, use of drones and the technology adopted to improve efficiency.
David Porter is the Divisional Roads Manager with the Department for Infrastructure and has responsibility for the delivery of the A6 works. He is a chartered Civil Engineer, a Fellow of ICE, a past chairman of the Region and is the current Regional Council member for Northern Ireland.
Alec Patterson is an associate director at AECOM. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Member of ICE, and has a large amount of Road Design experience including the A8 Belfast to Larne Dual Carriageway, DBFO Package 1 & 2, and Scheme 1; Beechill to Cloghogue Dual Carriageway.
Gareth McLaverty is a Contracts Manager at GRAHAM. He is a chartered Civil Engineer, a Member of ICE, and is currently leading the delivery of the A6 project for Graham Farrans Joint Venture.
