Architecture & engineering – Milford on Sea beach huts, a habitable sea defence, Southampton

About this event

The Valentine's Day storm of 2014 saw the destruction of 119 beach huts at Milford on Sea, Hampshire. The replacement huts, which are able to withstand 1:200 year storm wave conditions, provide durable, strong, accessible and a visually attractive facility for the hut owners and the general public, significantly enhancing the seafront.

The beach huts were completed in time for Summer 2017. The designers, represented by Paul Bulkeley (Snug Architects) and Damian Westlake (Ramboll), will describe how the project progressed through optioneering, design and construction phases and in particular how this holistic scheme integrated architecture with engineering.

About the Speakers

Paul Bulkeley is the founding director of Snug Architects and the catalyst behind its team of talented architects and urban designers. He is a visionary designer who is able to realise the latent potential of a project. He was the design director for this project.

Damian Westlake is an Associate in Ramboll's Marine team. He has 17 years consultancy experience, working primarily on the maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of highway and marine structures. He has undertaken the role of design project manager for this scheme from option study through to its completion.
