Government Soft Landings (GSL) is about adopting a mind-set and a process to align design and construction with operational asset management and purpose. This alignment means that the needs of the end-user shall be considered and addressed throughout the project lifecycle, from project initiation onwards. GSL shall be applicable to all new build projects and major refurbishments.
The idea of BIM has been around us for several years and the concept and associated benefits of 3D have been used in many projects across our industry. BIM Level 2 raises the level and strives to engage significant savings - not only through the cost of delivery but for the operational life of the structure.
The key principle of these complementary processes is to work in a collaboratively to develop understanding of all stakeholder needs and aspirations from users, asset managers, operators, constructors and designers.
The masterclass will be a combination of presentations and workshops to deliver the concepts of Government Soft Landings and consider them in our daily challenges. We ask the questions:-
The speakers for this event are David Philp (Centre for Digital Built Britain) and Roy Evans (Government Soft Landings Lead for the UK Govt. Cabinet Office) both of whom have been engaged in this change for many years.
David is a chartered construction manager with international experience of Building Information Modelling and digital transformation. He has been an integral part of the programme since the very beginning of the BIM Task Group where he started as Head of BIM Implementation. David helped kick-start the BIM Hubs (now Regions) and the various BIM4 Communities to ensure that there was an effective conduit between the work of Government and industry. David is working alongside the University of Cambridge communications team to forge an effective interface between the Digital Built Britain programme and the built environment stakeholders. David is a Fellow of the ICE.
Roy Evans has been with the Central Civil Service for ten years. He is providing a lead in the implementation of Government Soft Landings as part of the BIM Task Group. Government Soft Landings will ensure that business outcomes required are maintained by better early involvement of end users and monitoring of post project performance. Previously Roy worked at Hertfordshire County Council overseeing capital works programmes and Bovis Construction on a variety of projects. Roy is a Chartered Builder and a Member of the Institute of Asset Management.
