Bombs away! Risk mitigation of uxo in construction, Kegworth

About this event

The risk of unexploded ordnance on construction projects remains a credible issue to the UK construction sector. Across the whole of the UK development land is contaminated by unexploded ordnance that is located on a regular basis. UXO contamination on construction sites can come from two sources; aerial bombardment from both world wars and historic British and Allied munitions from both wartime and peace time training activities, including deliberate uncontrolled dumping.

These risks remain relevant as brownfield sites are redeveloped often with deeper and more complex foundation structures, additional services and infrastructure installations compared to post war redevelopment. Additionally the release of land formerly used by the MoD to the commercial and residential development market has meant that a proactive approach is required to reduce the risk presented by UXO.
