The talk will cover the history of Hong Kong's engineering consultancy business over the past decades. The important changes such as the role of the consulting engineer, consultancy firm size, technology, regulations, and the relationship between Hong Kong government, private developers and contractors will be discussed.
Hong Kong has gone through many major challenges in recent years, for instance, the transfer of sovereignty in 1997, and the SARS crisis in 2003. The strategies of consulting engineers adapting to the ever-changing business environment, along with the recent opportunities in the Belt and Road Initiative will also be discussed.

Ir. Francis KUNG is the Managing Director of Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Limited, and Global Board Member of Meinhardt, the largest independent engineering consultancy in Asia. Francis is also the immediate past Chairman of ACEHK, the Association of Consulting Engineers in Hong Kong.
Francis began working with Freeman Fox and Partners, which merged with John Taylor and Sons and Sir Bruce White Wolfe Barry and Partners in 1991. These three prominent consulting engineering practices formed Hyder Consulting in 1996. As part of the senior management of Hyder Consulting, Francis encouraged and actively participated in the continuous mergers and acquisitions processes, which later turned the company into a public-listed, worldwide infrastructure and civil engineering consultancy.
In 2009, Francis left Hyder Consulting and joined the Meinhardt Group. Moving from a public listed company to a private firm, he focused on nurturing bridge engineering as a specialisation in Meinhardt. With his broad experience in engineering consultancy, Francis is happy to share his journey for the success in the consulting engineering sector in Hong Kong.
