From providing safe harbours for mariners to protecting coastal communities from sea flooding and erosion, the design and construction of breakwaters is an engaging challenge for Civil Engineers.
Using examples from around the world, and including Plymouth Breakwater, Chris Brown will outline the complex nature of the sea and its interaction with a range of structures that act as breakwaters. The presentation will cover natural and artificial armouring and the challenges of predicting the response of these structures to wave action and undertaking construction monitoring and maintenance in the marine environment
Chris is a Director at Deborah Mclaren Consulting Ltd. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer with 40 years' experience of maritime and seismic structures in Australia, the Caribbean and UK. He has designed and contributed to the design of over 40 seawalls and breakwaters and is the inventor and patentee for the Seabee Armour Unit, which is currently in use at over 40 sites around the world. He has published widely on the design and construction of seawalls, breakwaters and armour units in UK and Australia. He has also designed 3 bridges and a mini-lighthouse subject to the effects of 11m waves.
