Butterley Impounding Reservoir - Spillway Improvement Works, Pontefract

About this event

The construction of Butterley Impounding Reservoir under the direction of T&C Hawksley, on behalf of Huddersfield Corporation Waterworks, commenced in August 1891 and was completed in June 1906. The reservoir spillway is a Grade II listed structure of masonry and concrete construction, located on the right hand side of the embankment.

The need for improvements to be made to the spillway had been identified and in June 2013 both planning and listed building applications were submitted for the proposed scheme. The works entailed the construction of a new reinforced concrete spillway within the existing structure and smoothing out of the steep cascades with a gradient similar to that of the existing upper spillway. Elements were incorporated into the design to mitigate the visual impact on the existing structure - lining the raised concrete walls internally in masonry, reusing the coping stones and re-profiling the embankment locally. Works on site commenced in the spring of 2016 and are now complete.

The presentation will focus on four aspects:

  1. The historical background of the construction of Butterley Reservoir and its substantial impact on the present scheme
  2. The challenges associated with the optioneering and planning processes
  3. The detailed design considerations and discharging the planning conditions
  4. The successful construction phase

The scheme of spillway improvement works won ICE Yorkshire and Humber's Smeaton Award in March 2017 for projects greater than £500,000 and less than £5m.
