About this event

David Brown is responsible for the safety of the Canal & River Trust's reservoirs. He is a member of the Reservoir Supervising Engineers Panel and a fellow of the Institution. In his 'spare time' he is the West Midlands' member of the ICE Panel for Historical Engineering Works, and chairs the ICE WM Historical Engineering Works group.

David will explain how the development of the canal system brought a need for a water supply and the early canal reservoirs that were built to provide that supply. The Canal and Rivers Trust now has 67 regulated reservoirs, including the reservoirs on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal in Worcestershire.

He will also describe some of the wider reservoir failures that led to legislation and the modern standards for reservoir engineering and emergency planning.
