During construction of four 2.05 MW wind turbines at Carsington Pasture, the ground conditions revealed a highly variable geology much worse than anticipated. Preliminary investigations had indicated shallow head deposits overlying limestone bedrock in an area of known karst weathering, extensive ancient mine-workings and silica sand excavations.
During development the ground conditions revealed at each location differed significantly and it was realised that no single remedial solution would be possible to adequately reinforce and suitably improve the bedrock foundation base for the envisaged design life.
The variability necessitated extensive investigation to better define the ground conditions.
The discussion will cover the difficult and varied geological conditions exposed across the site and implications posed to wind turbine foundation development and examine the development of the bespoke engineered ground reinforcement solutions. The talk will then summarise a follow-on scheme comprising two 2.5 MW turbines located at a quarry site where extraction of karstic dolomitic limestone aggregate is ongoing.
Mourice is an associate engineering geologist working for AECOM on a number of UK and international projects and is currently based in Chesterfield. He graduated in applied geology then completed a Masters Degree in Marine Geotechnics, and a PhD on the Engineering Geology of Mudrocks.
He spent over six years working for various specialist land and marine ground investigation contractors. He spent over five years as a research associate at the University of Sheffield where he also undertook lecturing and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students of geology and civil engineering. His research included projects on mudrocks, groundwater contamination, the long-term effects of restoration blasting in limestone quarries and the characterisation of sulfur compounds in structural fills and mudrocks in contact with buried steel and concrete.
He has subsequently spent over fifteen years working for various geotechnical and geoenvironmental consultancies. He specialises in ground investigation and characterisation and behaviour of geomaterials in construction, and has advised on many significant mining and civil engineering projects. He continues to be involved on preparation and revision of technical guidance and standards and his publications include guidance documents, papers, articles and contributions to books on issues relating to the implications and assessment of pyrite in engineering geomaterials, mudrock degradation and earthworks, issues in ground engineering, urban groundwater contamination, and quarry stability planning and reclamation.
