This online talk aims to help engineers take their first steps into how they can assist with the Climate Emergency.
As the engineering industry knuckles down to address the Climate Emergency and asks: “What can we do?”, this presentation will bring together two leaders within the field of sustainable design to address some of those issues.
Although a broad subject area with many challenges, the talk will focus on where we’ve been, where we’re going, and will look at how as engineers we can contribute more. This will range from designing using ‘standard’ materials better, looking at alternative materials and their applications, as well as raising the question – do we need to build?
Natasha completed her EngD in finding ways to increase the use of Low Impact Building Materials in UK construction in 2015. For over 6 years, she has been working as expert in these materials and on the wider subject of embodied carbon, alongside working as a Structural Engineer for Buro Happold. Her goal is for all those working in the built environment to understand and mitigate the environmental and social impact of their work and implement climate positive and equitable ways of design and construction.
James is Professor in Sustainable Design, Civil Engineering, University of Bristol with 16 years’ teaching experience and 12 years’ industry experience. He is a creative educator and has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship. James loves teaching and is a timber enthusiast. He teaches on all aspects of design from concrete to rammed earth. He has recently authored Designing timber structures: an Introduction (TRADA), Structural Timber Elements: A pre-scheme design guide (TRADA) and Conceptual Design of Buildings (IStructE).
