This is a presentation by Han Fook Kwang, an ICE committee member in Singapore, to compare Terzaghi's Rock Load Classification method against the empirical method adopted for the Q-system based on the case study of a constructed mined tunnel in Singapore.
The rock load estimated from the Terzaghi's Rock Load Classification method was obtained by correlating site tunnel convergence monitoring of a mined tunnel with a back analysis of a 3-D numerical model. The rock load estimated from the Q-system empirical method was based on the Q-value and the static modulus of deformation observed from the field.
Han Fook Kwang, currently working with the DSTA of Singapore, has extensive underground experience dealing with tunnelling and mining projects including the East West and North South Cable Tunnels projects. Fook Kwang is also involved heavily in ICE Singapore as a committee members and often shares his knowledge to fellow graduate members who are applying for chartership.
