Dr Mark Raiss will describe the background and history to the development of Crossrail and then describe the design of the Crossrail Paddington and Farringdon Stations. AECOM is in the unique situation of being the only consultant to have designed two underground stations under the Crossrail Central Section Framework.
Mark will contrast and compare the design of the two stations and highlight how the site locations determined the station configuration and construction methods.
Mark has overall accountability for Technical Excellence in AECOM’s Civil Infrastructure business in EMIA, and has a particular passion for the timely delivery of economic and buildable engineering solutions. He has extensive experience in major transportation infrastructure projects, both underground and elevated. He has led multi-disciplinary teams on projects in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, China, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Malaysia.
He has a world-class reputation for large and complex infrastructure projects. Mark was AECOM’s Programme Director for Crossrail - Europe’s largest construction project – including the detailed design of 2 major underground interchange stations, reference design for railway systems and independent checking of tunnels and stations.
He is currently AECOM’s Engineering Director for Riyadh Metro Lines 1 & 2 and AECOM’s Programme Director for HS2 in the UK. Prior to its acquisition by AECOM, Mark was the Chairman of Benaim which specialised in value engineering, optimising designs and working with contractors. Mark is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
