Design and construction of Thorndell Viaduct, Cardiff

About this event

Gareth Davies, Cass Hayward LLP, with Sven Heuten, BAM Nuttall and David Edwards, Skanska, will be talking about the design and construction of Thorndell Viaduct, a £5.5 million design and construct project for the replacement of the existing 58m six span iron railway viaduct. The rail viaduct forms part of the main route from the south coast via Horsham and Gatwick to London termini and is situated on a flood plain.

This was a technically challenging project requiring close co-operation between the teams of the client Network Rail, BAM Nuttall, Cass Hayward design team and the specialist contractors, to apply a number of innovative techniques to minimise environmental impact and promote build-ability.

The project won the ICE Designed in Wales award in 2016 and was shortlisted for the ICE People Choice Award in the same year.

A buffet will be served at 5.30pm on the Ground Floor of the North Building, the lecture will start at 6.15pm.

IStructE have organised this event, which ICE is supporting.
