Join the ICE East Midlands North Nottingham North Derbyshire (NNND) Branch for a presentation on the design and construction of the Boston Barrier scheme – a flagship National Priority Project for the Environment Agency, that aims to reduce the risk of flooding to properties whilst putting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals at its forefront.
Presented by the Design & Build joint venture BAM Nuttall Mott MacDonald (BMMJV), an overview of the £100m flood defence project in Lincolnshire will be presented with a focus on the permanent and temporary works design and construction of the main barrier and the design of the left bank sheet pile quay wall and reinforced concrete flood wall, within the Port of Boston.
The structure includes a 25m wide rising sector gate at its core, with reinforced concrete flood walls along both riverbanks to tie into flood defences downstream. The rising sector gate is housed in a 6,000m3 reinforced concrete structure, which was installed within a twin wall cofferdam in a working river. For this work, the BMMJV and Environment Agency were awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers Edmund Hambly medal in 2020.
