In this debate, you will have the chance to put forward your diversity questions to the panel, such as: what is the Institution currently doing to tackle gender inequality in civil engineering? How can we promote cultural diversity in the workplace? Will Brexit have a negative effect on our ability to break down diversity barriers?

Jonathan leads the Regional Support Team for ICE's London & South East England Regions, with responsibility for representing 20,000 ICE members, promoting the contribution of civil engineering to society, engaging with regional policy-makers, and inspiring the future generation of civil engineers. He is also a member of the ICE London & South East England Diversity and Inclusivity Task Force.
Early in his career Jonathan worked for DisabledGo, a social enterprise founded to maximise independence and choice for disabled people by providing information about accessibility. Jonathan was responsible for consulting local and regional disability groups, and pairing local authorities with commercial sponsors to create online local disabled access guides.
Most recently, Jonathan worked on South East England's £14.8bn Crossrail Programme in a range of senior consultation and communication roles, and in his final assignment managed stakeholder engagement throughout Crossrail's eastern region.
Jonathan is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and was previously a member of the programme committee of the Major Projects Association.
Jonathan has two sons, Leo (6) and Jasper (4). Both are showing promising signs in civil engineering, Leo in construction and Jasper in demolition
Cherrie Mendoza is a chartered civil and highway engineer and a qualified project manager (Association of Project Management) with 13 years of experience in the transport and infrastructure sector. In her role as Spatial Planning Manager for Highways England, she provides technical advice to developers as well as planning and highway authorities in the South East of England in relation to proposed developments which could have a safety impact on the Strategic Road Network. Previous to this role, she managed a portfolio of projects on the M25 and delivered capital projects under the DBFO contract, managing both the design and construction stages.
Cherrie is an ICE delegated engineer and is an active member of the ICE Diversity Task Group. She is interested in gender equality and mental health issues. She is currently studying Japanese Calligraphy as a hobby and a form of mindfulness and meditation.
By day Usman is a Supply Chain & Inclusion Manager for Tideway; by night Usman is a social entrepreneur.
Usman has founded Diversity Hut, a social enterprise which helps organisations not only become inclusive, but also attract diversity. Diversity Hut Ltd is now on Business in the Communities ARC programme for high impact business and also secured a spot in the ALLIA serious impact incubator.
Professionally, Usman is responsible for the Supply Chain Engagement to ensure the delivery of the legacy commitments for the East section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel a £600 million project to be delivered over the next 8 years.
Caroline Upton recently moved to R&W Civil Engineering as Senior Estimator. She has always worked in contracting, initially on site in Scotland and eventually moving to the south coast of England. She has experience of working on large multimillion pound projects for main contractors together with smaller projects for subcontractors.
Caroline been employed in the preconstruction phase for the past 20 years, primarily as Estimator but also with experience in buying and business development.
Caroline graduated with a BSc in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University and only sat her Chartered review in 2014 as a mature candidate. Since that time, she has taken a keen interest in the development of engineers working towards membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers, with and without the addition of Engineering Council registration at Technician, Incorporated or Chartered levels.
Alan works independently through his company, 'really good ideas'. He helps people to frame and pursue their aspirations and objectives; creating logical, imaginative and compelling plans and proposals. He works with individuals, start-ups, charities, educational establishments, consultancies and contractors.
The latter part of his full-time working life was in in Contract Bidding, Strategic Development and Business Consultancy roles. He had a leading role in the development of Amey's local government highways business and Amey's award-winning consultancy business. Whilst at EC Harris (now Arcadis) he led Behavioural Assessment and Collaborative Working consultancy services work for Thames Water, Heathrow, the Environment Agency and the Rail Delivery Group.
He is a member of the ICE's Transport, Network and Events and Diversity and Inclusion groups. He is a contributor to UCL's MSc in Strategic Management of projects. He is also reading for an MSc in Organizational Behaviour at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Osama is director of Solent Learning and Teaching. He was also elected to the board in November 2015 as a staff governor, and currently sits on the resources committee. Osama is a passionate teacher with nearly 20 years' experience teaching corporate finance; real estate finance and investment; economics; mathematics for economics; derivative finance; and investment management.
He has taught at renowned institutions including the University of Cambridge, University of Hong Kong, and HEC Paris. He is an avid advocate of technology enhanced learning, and has won multiple awards for his excellence and innovation in learning and teaching, including the University of Surrey Learning and Teaching Award 2010. Osama is a practicing Muslim with personal interests in community cohesion, multi-faith dialogue, and BME educational attainment.
Andrew Hallam joined Ramboll UK's Southampton office as a Senior Engineer working within the Infrastructure and Highways team in October 2017. Andrew previously worked as an Installation Design Engineer within High Voltage Cable Systems at the Prysmian Group.
Andrew is the immediate-past chairperson of the ICE Graduate and Student South Branch committee, which he joined following his graduation from the University of Plymouth in 2013. Andrew is currently preparing to sit his Chartered Professional Review with the ICE in Spring 2018 and his interest in growing his awareness and understanding of diversity in the workplace stemmed from developing his ICE Attributes.
