Dover Marina Pier: A Case Study in Modular Precast, Belfast

An examination and study of how Dover Marina Pier was formed in precast units, including an analysis of how the precast units were evolved to provide a safe buildable marine structure, which also acts a breakwater for the new marina.

All aspects of the precast scheme will be discussed including precast development, modular manufacture, precast handling, trial builds, heavy/abnormal haulage to Belfast Harbour, stevedoring at York dock, and delivery by chartered cargo shipment to Dover port. Additionally, the unloading, barge storage and installation of the precast elements at Dover Marina Pier as undertaken by Volkerstevin will also be reviewed.

Speakers

Abhey Gupta MPhil, MTech

Abhey is Commercial and Operations Director for Macrete Ireland Limited based at Toomebridge, Northern Ireland. Previously, Abhey has worked in business analysis, concrete technology, bridge engineering, precast engineering, quality control, project management, cost and resource control and R&D projects supported by TSB and Invest NI, having held senior positions within national and multinational consultancies and the construction companies.

As a technical expert in the precast industry, Abhey supervised various award winning Knowledge Transfer Projects and also advised university based research groups to achieve their plans. Abhey has been heavily involved in numerous licensing agreements and development with companies in Europe, USA and Australia.

Through these projects, Abhey has won various national awards for innovative bridge designs and constructions and business management. Most recently, Abhey won the 2017 Ferguson Medal, which was presented by ICE NI (Institution of Civil Engineers, NI) for his technical paper, 'Solving the Challenges of Sea Defence.'

Andrew Doherty BSc (Hons)

Andrew is a graduate in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast and is currently a Senior Project Engineer with Macrete Ireland Limited, Toomebridge, with over 34 years’ experience in the ready-mix and precast concrete industries, including 14 years’ employment at Macrete.

Starting with Macrete as a Design Engineer with designs as diverse as stadia precast through to post-tensioned agricultural storage tanks, Andrew’s role at Macrete has evolved through estimating, material procurement, contract management, customer liaison, together with business and product development.
