Nepal has a high proportion of non-engineered buildings vulnerable to collapse in earthquakes, and in 2015 a major earthquake cost the lives of nearly 9000 people.

In 2008 the speaker conducted a seismic retrofitting project aimed at the homeowners and masons responsible for vulnerable construction, and in the immediate aftermath of the 2015 earthquake the speaker deployed to Kathmandu as one of two engineers with the Urban Search And Rescue team SARAID (Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters).

The presentation will describe both the retrofitting and search and rescue work in Nepal, discussing some of the various ways that engineers can contribute to improving resilience of vulnerable communities around the world.

Joshua Macabuag

Joshua is a structural engineer whose portfolio includes Wimbledon Court 3, refurbishments and restorations of heritage buildings and several large and complex developments in the Middle East. He also has overseas development experience in South Africa, Nepal and Peru, has worked with Engineers Without Borders-UK and was apprentice to Past ICE President Paul Jowitt, to create the online toolkit for delivery of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Most recently, Josh has participated in several post-tsunami field investigations in Japan, is an engineer for an Urban Search and Rescue Team (SARAID), and is now completing an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) on tsunami risk for buildings.
