About this event

Please note: this event is now fully booked.

Nepal has a high proportion of non-engineered buildings vulnerable to collapse in earthquakes, and in 2015 a major earthquake cost the lives of nearly 9000 people.

In 2008 the speaker conducted a seismic retrofitting project aimed at the homeowners and masons responsible for vulnerable construction, and in the immediate aftermath of the 2015 earthquake the speaker deployed to Kathmandu as one of two engineers with the Urban Search And Rescue team SARAID (Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters).

The presentation will describe both the retrofitting and search and rescue work in Nepal, discussing some of the various ways that engineers can contribute to improving resilience of vulnerable communities around the world.

Teas and coffees 5.30 – 6.00pm

Presentation to follow CEC AGM

Please book a place online.

Please note arrangements have been made for the ICE Library to be kept open a little bit longer to provide an opportunity for visitors to see the Guinness Record Breaking Lego Suspension before or after the meeting.
