A Salutary Lesson – Engineering Masonry Viaducts, Exeter

About this event

Exeter City Club invite to an evening lecture commencing at 18:30 with light refreshments and a networking opportunity from 18:00.

In 1989 Bill Harvey answered the challenge for an “analysis” of masonry viaducts. Since 2000 he has grown to realise that he was wrong! He will talk about his concept of bridges now, compared to that of 1989. Bill will also talk about the implications of engineers getting it wrong back then and how we can measure so much more now than we were able to in the 1980’s.

Bill Harvey

Bill was hooked on engineering when his uncle took him to see Clifton Suspension Bridge. He went to Leeds University and graduated with a PhD. He spent 6 years on bridge sites including 2 years at the Humber Bridge. He then went back to academia first to Dundee and then Exeter Universities. In 2000, he set up his own consultancy and still travels the world inspecting and consulting on bridges.
